Dr. Mrs. Florence C. Omumu

Mrs Florence Chiedu Omumu (Ph.D) - Director, Delta State University Degree Program, College of Education, Agbor.

" Lives of great men/women all remind us we can make our lives sublime " - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Florence, as her friends and close associates often refers to her, grew in profile as an academics and public success, stories that wound around her did little credit to the toil and dynamism of her early years.

Thanks to this little work, we know better.

The public only know of her outward persona, her physical attributes, her guttural voice, her majestic strides, her sometimes imperial or royal carriage, the charisma of a dogged inspirer, her eyes that are at once bold and kind, her air of prosperity without ostentation, her pious dignity, her gregarious grace, her sharp and dissecting intellect, a woman who simultaneously soars and bows, depicting a success that recognizes the root of her route. But few knows the following: that the same Auntie Florence lost her mum at age six, the same Florence of the swagger was once a house help, that the same academic giant hawked 'Akamu' and Bread in the streets of Ubiaja, to keep body, soul and mind together, that she accompanied her elder sister (Mrs Reginal Otokhine) to the various Markets in search what to buy or sell when she is not toiling at her studies. Yes the beginning was turbulent. Her father was very poor. The mother as stated earlier, died when she was six years old. But the young Florence did not limit herself to the environment. She completed her Primary Education at the All Saints Anglican School ( now Central Primary School) Ubiaja, Edo State in 1972.

She gained admission into the prestigious Baptist Girls High School, Agbor in 1973. She graduated with flying colours in 1977. She worked briefly as an auxiliary Teacher with the Marymount College, Agbor, while waiting for her admission into the University. Though, she is a born and trained Teacher, but she initially flirted with the idea of becoming a nurse.

Why Nursing?

She gave me two reasons:

  • Economic reason: Student Nurses are been paid by the then government.
  • Social reason: Nurses are smart in their dressings.

Why did she jettisoned the dream?

She quickly responded, that she can not stand the site of sick people or that of blood. But Providence has another idea! She later married a Medical Doctor!

In 1978, mother luck smiled on her as she gained admission into the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife for her degree studies. Again, she excelled in her academic pursuits at the Great Ife! She graduated with B.A(Ed) in 1982 in the department of History Education. She did her mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Benue State in 1982 - 1983.

In October 31st, 1982, she married her sweetheart, Dr Shedrack Omumu a Medical Practitioner and a Consultant Surgeon. Presently, the Medical Director of Ropheka Medical Center, Agbor.

The marriage is blessed with four surviving Children who are all accomplished individuals in their areas of chosen professions.

  1. A Pharmacist.
  2. A Lawyer.
  3. A Medical Doctor
  4. And an Engineer.

Further blessings to the marriage also includes four healthy grandchildren.
